In the Youth Mode presented by K-HOLE, Mass Indie is described in relation to the poles of “sameness” and “difference”, and the poles of “preservation” and “evasion”.  Mass Indie ditched the Alternative preoccupation with evading sameness and focused on celebrating difference instead.
I understand Alternative as a term used to describe a desire to be different, a disdain for belonging to a group and the loneliness that comes with the pursuit of individuality. On the other hand, Mass Indie means to be somewhere between different and normal at all times. By celebrating difference, Mass Indie represents a new form of pluralist pop culture, a new form of difference marked by tolerance rather than hostility.
